Let’s take a moment to wish Randy Travis a happy 64th birthday and send our prayers for his speedy recovery.: Randy Travis’ voice is one of the few that truly gives me chills. Despite suffering a stroke many years ago, he delivered a beautiful rendition of “Amazing Grace” in honor of fellow country music star George Jones.

Performing at the Grand Ole Opry, Travis was backlit by blue and purple lighting as he paid his respects to the late George Jones. He was joined by peers like Alan Jackson, Vince Gill, and Travis Tritt.
Mary, Travis’s wife, has publicly discussed her husband’s challenging recovery and how supportive fans have been during this time. In July 2013, Randy Travis was rushed to a Dallas hospital with complications from viral cardiomyopathy. He suffered a stroke, needed brain surgery, and ended up in a coma. Doctors gave him only a 1 or 2 percent chance of survival.
Faced with this dire prognosis, Mary Davis Travis had the option to turn off life support. Despite the doctors’ grim outlook, she chose to keep fighting for her husband. “I prayed hard, ‘God, please let me have him back, any way, shape or form,'” Mary recalls, as per USA Today.
Randy remained in a coma, but Mary never considered switching off the machines, even though he was in a fragile state. Then, one day, a miracle happened—Randy woke up.
“We’re blessed. We’re happy to be where we are. We don’t know what God has in store for us at the end of this recovery. Right now, we’re just thankful to be where we are, and we’re singing a different song,” she said. “We’re happy to serve a purpose wherever there is a purpose for us to serve. Of course, one day he would love to be back up on that stage. Right now, we’re just enjoying life and are very blessed to be where we are.”
Since his stroke, Randy has been wheelchair-bound but is making progress and can walk shorter distances by himself. He has also returned to music, maintaining his love and passion for it. In 2016, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
“Everyone who knows Randy knows he has had a colorful life. He’s had a tough life at times, but also a beautiful life,” his wife says.
Despite still struggling with aphasia, Travis has been working and praying to regain his talent. Watch his performance and let us know what you think about his road to recovery!
