Perry, 39, had been a judge on the long-running singing competition alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan since 2018, following the show’s revival by ABC after a two-year break.
Emotional Final Show
In February, Perry announced her planned departure. For her final episode, she entered hand-in-hand with Richie, 74, and Bryan, 47, and became emotional upon seeing host Ryan Seacrest.
A Tribute to Katy Perry
To honor Perry’s time on the show, the top 12 female contestants of the season performed a medley of her hits, including “Teenage Dream,” “Dark Horse,” and “California Gurls.” Perry was seen enjoying the tribute while eating a slice of pizza. After the performance, she enthusiastically climbed on top of the judges’ desk, celebrating with a roar and lifting her arms in a triumphant gesture.
Perry later took to the stage to perform “What Makes a Woman” alongside third-place finalist Jake Blocker.
An Emotional Moment
During the show, Perry was moved to tears during season 22 winner Abi Carter’s performance of Billie Eilish’s ballad “What Was I Made For.” As the credits rolled, Bryan and Richie embraced Perry, though she did not give a farewell speech to the audience.
Before the finale, Perry had predicted she would be very emotional. “I think I will be crying at anything,” she told KABC in an interview. “It’s been a beautiful journey, and I love watching these kids grow and become this big beautiful patchwork quilt.”
Announcing Her Departure
Perry revealed her departure plans on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, admitting she hadn’t told her fellow judges beforehand. Her exit marks the first change in the judging lineup since Perry, Richie, and Bryan joined in 2018.
